December Rain!

Rain, rain, rain - will it ever stop? I am listening to it pelting down on my skylight and it is so dark and cold outside, that I think that hibernation is the only option for staying sane! To-day Bella won't get her walk and that only happens a few days per year - and I am already feeling guilty, but there are limits!

Despite December also being very busy preparing for Christmas I have managed to finish the three 12" square paintings that I wanted to re-work and I think that I can truly say, that I am much happier with them now - here they are together:

They are not meant as a triptych but could certainly be used as such.
I don't know what happened but I just lost half of this post - and I have no idea why! It is utterly maddening especially as it took quite a while to write and I was pleased with it.

I will get back to it as time allows - and when I have simmered down!!!

This and That.

These three little paintings are just finished - each is a 8" square - and they are quite heavily textured, more so than most of my work. They are individual pieces (or 'notes') as I look at it - not really serious paintings, but in-betweens when I have some paint left over to have fun with. In this case I discovered after the fact that they look quite nice together. I have several more of these small canvasses as well as some 6" squares sitting around and quite enjoy them - depending on how many I end up with, they might be fairly effective hung as a block or individually as a spot of colour in a small awkward space.
Otherwise two more slightly larger paintings that I'm happy with are finished:

But three other 12" squares that I thought were finished, I now realize are not what I would like them to be - so they will have to be re-worked though not completely changed - I want to keep certain parts of them and hope to be able to bring that off; this is in many ways harder than starting from the beginning again.

Above are two shots from this year's Eastside Culture Crawl in Vancouver - it is an amazing event - I went last year as well and found it even better this time. Over 400 artists' studios in a section of the city are open to the public over the weekend - plus two evenings - at the end of November, and it has been going on for 18 years. Many of the studios have several artists showing their work, which can range from pottery, furniture, textiles, glass, wood, sculpture, painting as well as anything else you can think of! In some ways it is overwhelming and there is of course no way of taking it all in, so you have to pick and choose.
I went with a friend who does beautiful fused glass work and we concentrated on two buildings each with numerous studios over numerous floors, both converted old factory/warehouse buildings;  we lasted four hours until exhaustion set in - and we saw a lot of really good work as well as met and talked to several of the artists and many of the other visitors - all in all everyone had a great time.

It is an overwhelming proof of how many artists are doing really good work - and more and more are joining our ranks - so yes, it was inspiring and great to see - but it also begs the question: Why are we all producing so much work and caring so deeply about it when only very few can make a living by it (and not a very good one at that), and while people love to look and admire - really so very few are willing to buy art to take home??? Why are the art galleries closing while a new couch, jacket or vacation etc. seem much more important for most people??? At least in this area at this time.

I wish I knew the answer to that----------------------!
